Why You Don't Have to Worry About Mercury With FinerFin tuna
A typical concern when it comes to fatty fish like tuna is the levels of mercury contained in the fish.
FinerFin uses yellowtail tuna, and while yellowtail will typically have a higher mercury content than chunk light varieties, FinerFin goes to great lengths to ensure that our fresh tuna does not contain dangerous mercury levels.
Why Is FinerFin Tuna Low in Mercury?
Typically, all types of canned tuna will have lower levels of mercury than tuna steaks and sushi, as smaller tuna are used for canned products.
This is especially true for FinerFin's tuna, as we only source pole- and line-caught tuna. These tuna caught at the surface are not only smaller but younger as well. Mercury content in tuna increases with the age and size of the fish, so by using only younger and smaller tuna, we can ensure that the levels of mercury are low and will not be harmful over time.
Albacore (white) tuna also tends to be higher in mercury content, and FinerFin does not use that kind of tuna in its products.
Why Is Mercury in Tuna a Concern?
Mercury can accumulate in the human body over time and is a toxin that could lead to immune, cardiovascular, and neurological system problems. But the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says that around 8 to 12 ounces per week of canned light tuna is safe to eat.
